Where Kings Rest

Westminster Abbey is home to the tombs of 30 kings and queens, starting with King Edward the Confessor, whose shrine is located just behind the High Altar. Henry III, who built the Abbey we see today, is buried nearby. Notable tombs include Edward I and his queen Eleanor of Castile, Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, Richard II and Anne of Bohemia, and Henry V, who is buried close to St Edward’s Chapel. His chantry chapel, where Holy Communion is still celebrated every year on St Crispin’s Day, stands above his tomb.

Henry VII’s Lady Chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is a masterpiece of English medieval architecture. It houses the imposing tomb of Henry VII and his queen, Elizabeth of York, with gilt bronze effigies. Nearby are the tombs of Protestant Queen Elizabeth I and Catholic Queen Mary I, buried together. Other royal burials include Charles II, Queen Anne, and Mary II, who are buried in a simple vault with small inscriptions. Mary, Queen of Scots, also lies in the south aisle, with Edward VI's tomb positioned just in front of the altar. George II, the last monarch to be buried in the Abbey, rests in a vault beneath the central aisle
