The Tower Tells All

Tower Bridge, one of London's most iconic landmarks, was built to solve the problem of a new river crossing without disrupting river traffic. Designed by Sir Horace Jones and Sir John Wolfe Barry, construction began in 1886 and took eight years to complete. The bridge's remarkable design features two massive towers connected by walkways, with a bascule mechanism that allows the road to lift for river traffic. When completed in 1894, Tower Bridge was the largest bascule bridge in the world. The bridge has undergone several changes over the years, including switching from steam to electrified hydraulics in 1976 and receiving a red, white, and blue paint job for the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. In 1982, Tower Bridge opened to the public as a museum, showcasing its rich history. Today, it remains a symbol of London's innovation and a must-visit for tourists
