Historic Pubs In London

No tour of London’s most historic pubs would be complete without The George Inn and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, two of the city’s most iconic watering holes. Just off Borough High Street, The George Inn is the only surviving galleried coaching inn in London. Rebuilt in 1676 after a fire, its wooden galleries and rambling structure echo a bygone age when stagecoaches ruled the roads. Once surrounded by other inns like the long-lost Tabard - Chaucer’s pilgrims’ departure point—it holds a special place in literary and architectural history. Dickens himself was a fan, describing these inns as “great rambling queer old places… wide enough and antiquated enough to furnish materials for a hundred ghost stories.”

Equally steeped in history is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, rebuilt in 1667 following the Great Fire of London. Its unassuming exterior hides a maze of shadowy rooms, cellars and staircases perfect for a pint in near-monastic gloom. Though the cellar’s origins are often (mistakenly) linked to a 13th-century monastery, its true charm lies in the dark corners and creaky floorboards.
